I began my career in journalism in 2005 after graduating from Marist College with a bachelor's degree in English. I became a staff reporter at the Harlem Valley Times, a weekly paper that covered my hometown. I was promoted to editor of both The Harlem Valley Times and The Register Herald, its sister paper. Even though I grew up in these towns, I learned a great deal about them by attending board meetings and covering local events. I managed a staff of reporters, edited articles and designed pages. I also wrote movie and theater reviews for the company's Weekend arts and entertainment section. Taconic Press, the company that published these papers, shut down in 2009.
I left the weekly world in 2008 to become a copy editor at the Poughkeepsie Journal, which is New York state's oldest newspaper and the second oldest in the nation. I honed my abilities to edit articles and design pages on a strict deadline, and I learned that the hectic pace of daily news can be streamlined into a well-oiled machine when the staff works together as a cohesive unit. When the opportunity arose to work for ZAM, a website that covers online video games, I couldn't pass it up. The site focuses on massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) such as EverQuest and World of Warcraft, which was my favorite hobby at the time. |
I started at ZAM as a part-time reporter in 2008 and ultimately became editor-in-chief in 2010, which gave me the opportunity to work with a staff of writers and attend events across the United States to learn more about the gaming industry. During this time, I maintained my ties to the local area by writing articles about music for Hudson Valley Weekend.
While working at ZAM was a wonderful experience, I missed the world of local news that I covered at the Harlem Valley Times, The Register Herald and the Poughkeepsie Journal. In 2011 I became an associate editor at The Lakeville Journal Co. and currently work on three weekly newspapers: The Lakeville Journal, The Millerton News and The Winsted Journal. I edit content and design pages for all three papers, and I continue to write news articles about the community. I also cover TV, movies, music, art, theaters, games, comic books and more for Compass, our arts and entertainment section.
In 2015, in addition to my associate editor duties, I was promoted to special sections editor at The Lakeville Journal Co. I'm in charge of our seasonal supplements, including Summertime, Fall Improvements, Spring Tonic, Holiday Gift Guide, Towns & Villages and Health & Wellness. I also started writing for A Place to Hang Your Cape, a website that covers the superhero genre in every medium and supports independent comic book creators.
